25th Annual Putnam Spelling Bee

Tonight we went with Lori and Rob to Cyrano's Playhouse to see "The 25th Annual Putnam Spelling Bee". We all bought a Groupon to see it in late spring. The Anchorage Daily News gave the performance a rave review; but, I was still somewhat skeptical of a musical about a spelling bee. (I find musicals to be particularly perilous-- if they're great, they're wonderful... but, if they're at all weak, they're horrific.)

One of the most notable aspects of the play is that 4 audience members compete in the Bee --along with 6 cast members. And... John was one of the spellers. He did great! (not a surprise) --several people commented favorably on his performance. It was especially fun for Lori, Rob, and me to have someone we knew on stage :)

Anyway, the musical was really good. It was cute and funny and moved right along. I was impressed and will definitely watch for Cyrano's shows in the future.

We saw a locally staged version, but the musical is a touring show. If you have the chance to see it, go. It's fun!
