On the Way to Homer

On Friday night, we headed down for a weekend in Homer. We left later than we would have liked (about 5:30pm) for the 4 hour drive. We stopped in Girdwood for our favorite pizza (Roasted Yukon Gold Potato) at Chair 5. Things were bustling along as we left Girdwood and headed down the Kenai Penninsula. (Here's a nice summary of the sights on the Kenai from a local lodge.) Unfortunately, we soon came to an abrupt stop.

It's never a good sign when the people in front of you get out of their car. We followed suit. There was an accident about a quarter mile in front of us. We eventually sorted out that there had been a truck with a trailer that pulled out in front of a motorcycle. The biker laid his bike down. He was apparently responsive and his motorcycle was in good condition. They did aerovac the biker out , since the nearest hospital was over 45 miles away down a winding highway. We ended up parked on the highway for more than an hour.

We had thought we'd make it into Homer before nightfall (around 11:30pm), but didn't. We did, however, pull over to capture this beautiful view (even though we don't know what it was!).

We arrived at our hotel, which was very... hmmm, shabby. It wasn't grungy; it was very clean. It was just old. The mattress was a bit limp. The walls were quite thin, and there was a night club/sports bar next door that played live music 'til 1am. We were less than thrilled, but looked forward to Saturday.
